Italian bar and eatery, Pizza Fritta 180 in Surry Hills has opened it’s doors and it is the perfect place to meet, chat, eat and drink.
The vibrant little sister to Via Napoli, Pizza Fritta 180 is inspired by Founder and Head Chef Luigi Esposito’s Neapolitan heritage and the classic dishes of his childhood, paying homage to the flash fried pizza – pizza fritta.
Sydney Social 101 were lucky enough to pop in recently and try out pizza fritta for ourselves. Upon arrival to the lively restaurant which is reminiscent of the bar scene you’ll find in the backstreets of Naples we were very warmly welcomed by charismatic Luigi and his fun and vibrant staff ( one of the most fun and warm welcome we have ever received). With options of both indoor and outdoor seating we opted to sit outside so we could people watch and enjoy the balmy weather.
To start we ordered a round of spritz (which are only $10 each- Bargain!). I had the Limoncello Spritz while my date had the Aperol Spritz, each spritz was strong, refreshing and the perfect way to start our meal. We then ordered the creamy and delicious burrata with heirloom tomato, pepper and olive oil from the Antipasti, Fritture & Contorni menu. Although Pizza Fritta 180 is known for their super tasty pizza frittas they also serve a variety of other yummy items including Arancini with four cheese, deep fried salt & peper Cod Fish dusted in rice flour and eggplant parmigiana on montanara.
We then moved on to the main attraction of Pizza Fritta 180 – the pizza fritta itself! Golden and crispy on the outside and filled with warm and delicious goodies on the inside, pizza fritta is similar to the calzone in all its cheesy glory with the ingredients folded inside. Using recipes passed down from Luigi’s beloved nonna Rosa, pizza fritta is the other pizza Napoli is famous for. We enjoyed the Classica 180 which is filled with Provola Cheese, Ricotta Cheese & Pepper and the Chiara which is stuffed with Tomato, Mozzarella Cheese, Pepper & Basil. So delish! Other stand outs on the menu included the ‘Nonna Rosa’ which is filled with salame, provola e pomodoro and ricotta, affectionately named after his Nonna and the ‘Pizza Elena’, succulent pork cheek with provola and creamy ricotta.
We ended out meal with the heavenly Nutella Calzone which was crunchy on the outside and filled with warm, oozing nutella. You must leave room for this one!
Pizza Fritta 180 is a must visit for anyone wanting a heart warming and delicious meal that is very reasonably priced. Luigi and the team will make you feel very welcomed and well looked after and the fun and vibrant atmosphere will make you never want to leave.
